Discover Yemeni Hand Embroidery: Heritage, Craft, and Contemporary Dialogue

As the global fashion calendar turns its attention to London Fashion Week, a quieter yet deeply resonant presentation invites audiences to engage with something far more intimate: the enduring artistry of Yemeni hand embroidery. Titled Discover Yemeni Hand Embroidery, this two-day showcase (September 20–21) offers a rare opportunity to encounter textiles that carry generations of cultural memory, skill, and identity.

Taking place at 91–93 Great Portland Street, this presentation brings together a curated selection of handcrafted wall hangings, cushions, and pouches—each piece a testament to the intricate, time-honored techniques of Yemeni artisans. These are not merely decorative objects; they are living archives, stitched with stories of community, resilience, and tradition.

The works are created by YENOF, an initiative dedicated to supporting women artisans in Yemen by preserving embroidery practices while providing sustainable income. In a context where cultural heritage is at risk due to ongoing conflict and displacement, YENOF’s work becomes both an act of preservation and empowerment. Every thread speaks to continuity in the face of disruption.

This special presentation is facilitated by IL-CI and invited by Kazna Asker as part of her Fashion Week presentation Family/ällel, hosted in collaboration with Tank Magazine. The framing is significant: by situating traditional Yemeni craft within a contemporary fashion context, the event challenges conventional hierarchies between “craft” and “design,” positioning embroidery as both heritage and innovation.

Kazna Asker’s curatorial vision often explores themes of belonging, lineage, and diasporic identity—making Yemeni embroidery a powerful medium through which these ideas can unfold. The title Family/ällel itself suggests intergenerational connections, something deeply embedded in the practice of embroidery, where techniques and motifs are passed down through families over centuries.
