Amine Chaouali
About the Artist
Amine Chaouali is a Tunisian visual artist whose work stands at the crossroads of tradition, experimentation, and bold contemporary expression.
Artist Biography
Born in 1969 in the historic region of Carthage, his artistic journey began early, shaped by the rich cultural landscapes of northern Tunisia and a deep, instinctive attraction to visual creation.
Entirely self-taught, Chaouali forged his own path outside academic conventions, developing a free and highly personal artistic language. This independence allowed him to explore multiple disciplines—painting, sculpture, ceramics, installation, and performance—without constraint, establishing him as a truly multidisciplinary “plastician” in the contemporary art world.
Over more than three decades, Chaouali has built an extensive body of work exhibited across Tunisia and internationally, notably in France and Spain. His art is often described as post-contemporary, blending influences from Impressionism, Fauvism, Orientalism, and Art Brut while continuously evolving beyond them. His signature style reflects a vibrant dialogue between Mediterranean heritage and modern visual experimentation, marked by bold color palettes, expressive forms, and innovative materials such as ceramics, resin, and glass.
Recurring motifs—particularly the female figure and the cat—form the symbolic core of his universe. Through these subjects, Chaouali explores themes of identity, freedom, sensuality, and mystery. His women are powerful, complex, and multifaceted, while the cat emerges as an alter ego: independent, enigmatic, and deeply intuitive.
What distinguishes Chaouali is his constant reinvention. From early naturalistic and orientalist influences to impressionist and fauvist explorations, and later to experimental techniques such as his distinctive “pointraillisme,” his work resists categorization. Each phase reflects a desire to push boundaries and redefine artistic language.
Today, Amine Chaouali is regarded as a key figure in contemporary North African art—a visionary whose creations transcend borders, blending poetry, materiality, and emotion into a singular artistic voice. His work invites viewers into a world where tradition is not preserved as static memory, but reimagined as a living, evolving force.

Exhibitions of Amine Chaouali: A Journey Through Color, Form, and Emotion
Amine Chaouali’s artistic career is marked by a rich and dynamic exhibition history, reflecting both his creative evolution and his multidisciplinary approach. Over the years, he has presented more than thirty solo exhibitions in Tunisia and internationally, establishing himself as a significant voice in contemporary North African art.
His exhibitions often revolve around strong thematic concepts. In “ELLES” (2019), presented at Galerie Saladin in Sidi Bou Saïd, Chaouali explored the complexity of femininity through a series of expressive works combining painting, ceramics, and installation. The exhibition celebrated the female figure as both muse and symbol, rendered through vibrant colors and intricate compositions.
This fascination with symbolic figures extends into “On dirait un Chat” (2020), another major exhibition where the motif of the cat becomes central. Through more than forty works, Chaouali transforms the animal into a metaphor for freedom, intuition, and artistic independence, blurring the line between human identity and symbolic representation.
His exhibition “Volupté” further deepens this exploration of sensuality and emotion. Here, Chaouali celebrates beauty, desire, and the poetry of everyday life, presenting works that oscillate between figurative storytelling and dreamlike abstraction. His compositions, rich in movement and color, evoke a sense of joy and imaginative escape.
Beyond Tunisia, Chaouali has also exhibited in Europe, notably with “Essence méditerranéenne” (2019) in France. This exhibition highlighted his connection to Mediterranean heritage, particularly through his innovative ceramic work, where traditional techniques are reinterpreted with contemporary artistic language.
More recently, exhibitions such as “Miroir, mon beau miroir” (2025) reveal an increasingly experimental direction. Combining metal, resin, painting, and collage, Chaouali creates immersive environments where reflection, both literal and psychological—becomes a central theme. His works invite viewers into an intimate dialogue with identity, perception, and self-image.
Across all these exhibitions, one constant remains: Amine Chaouali’s ability to reinvent his artistic language while maintaining a strong emotional and symbolic core. Each exhibition is not merely a presentation of works, but a complete universe, where color, material, and imagination converge to create a deeply immersive artistic experience.
