Adel Megdiche

About the Artist

Artist Biography

Born in 1949 in Sfax, Tunisia, Adel Megdiche is a prominent figure of contemporary Tunisian art whose practice bridges painting, memory, and cultural heritage. A graduate of the École des Beaux-Arts in Tunis, he further expanded his artistic journey in France, residing at the Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris in 1977. Between 1980 and 1982, he lived and taught in Rabat, Morocco, before returning to Tunisia, where he continued to shape generations of artists as a teacher at the École des Beaux-Arts in Tunis and at the Higher Institute of Dramatic Art.

Megdiche’s work unfolds as a deeply poetic and dreamlike universe where figuration and abstraction coexist with symbols, calligraphy, and layered geometric structures. His visual language draws from Arab-Islamic and local Tunisian heritage, transforming collective memory, historical narratives, and folk tales into imaginative, almost theatrical compositions. His characters—often dressed in richly detailed traditional garments—appear suspended between past and present, reality and imagination.

Through dense compositions of overlapping forms, squares, triangles, and Arabic script, Megdiche constructs a visual rhythm that is both structured and intuitive. His refined use of color reveals a near-scientific sensitivity to light, where each tone becomes a source of energy and illumination across the canvas.
