About the Artist

His work explores place, identity, and atmosphere through a refined visual language that balances documentary sensitivity with an artistic eye. Drawing from both European and North African cultural contexts, Vaughan creates images that feel intimate, contemplative, and quietly cinematic.

Artist Biography

Working primarily with photography, his practice often focuses on light, texture, and the subtle narratives embedded in everyday environments. Vaughan’s images resist spectacle, instead inviting the viewer to slow down and observe, revealing moments of stillness, ambiguity, and emotional depth.

Living and working in Tunis has had a strong influence on his visual approach, enriching his work with layered histories, architectural rhythms, and a distinct sense of place. His photography exists at the intersection of art and observation, where geography becomes mood and time feels suspended.

Paul Vaughan

The artist studied at Horsley College of Art and later at Saint Martins College of Art, where they followed a general art and painting programme before specialising in sculpture.

They have participated in several exhibitions in Tunisia, despite the many challenges facing the art scene in the country.

Their practice is deeply rooted in experimentation, with a strong interest in multimedia, photography, digital imagery, and the use of handcrafted tools such as self-made brushes. By combining drawings created during art school over 40 years ago with contemporary media, the artist creates works that bridge past and present. These pieces are often produced as limited editions, signed and numbered.

Themes of women’s freedom—both in the Arab world and more broadly—are a recurring and important source of inspiration in this work.
