Aly Ben Salem

Born December 25, 1910 in Tunis and died February 20, 2001 in Stockholm, was a Tunisian- Swedish painter and visual artist. He studied at the Institut supérieur des beaux-arts in Tunis and, in 1936, won the Tunisian government’s first prize for painting and the first prize for miniatures in North Africa. The following year, he was chosen to represent Tunisia at the Universal Exhibition in Paris. He spent most of his life in Sweden, where he married Kerstin Nilsson for the second time. He returned to Tunisia in 1970, settling in the town of Hammamet. In his drawings, Aly Ben Salemfollows a metaphorical symbolism in which forms are defined by curved lines, supple and precise, and these forms seem to be repeated ad infinitum. On October 10, 2010, the Tunisian Post Office issued a postage stamp bearing his likeness.
